Contents

In technical communication, many standards provide us with collections of safety signs or icons for machines and devices. However, depending on the application, these are often either too general, too specific or not available for the specific situation. In order to provide the user with the best possible information, new icons and safety signs must be created. This is where the design guidelines for visual signs come into play. For example, ISO 3864 for safety signs or ISO 80416 for icons on machines and devices. ISO 9186 gives us clarity as to whether these icons and safety signs are recognized with sufficient accuracy, with test methods for comprehensibility and visual quality. The presentation provides the standards-based creation process for icons and safety signs as well as test methods ready for use.

Takeaways

Become familiar with the design guidelines from ISO 22727, ISO 3864 and ISO 80416 for visual signs and apply ISO 9186 to test icons to ensure that the symbols are understood.
